[kym] - Tachometer to Venox (How it was made) - ; A PORTAL FEATURE: The tachometer is Faze 5 inch diameter

Tachometer installation to Venox :BANRASTA:

The tachometer is Faze 5 inch diameter instrument fitting also to 2 cylinder engines. It has a light-blue electroluminescence illumination. It shows up to 10 000 rpm but it is suitable for Venox since you hardly use such high rpm’s in constant use (at least I don’t use). The tacho is shown in fig 1 with all the cables and accessories included. There was also an additional shift light, which I threw away (fits probably to tuning cars but I feel not for a custom bike). Installation is rather easy as such: red cable to +12V, black to earth and green to ignition signal (to ignition pole#1’s –connector which is a green cable with a gray stripe – see fig 3). In addition, electroluminescence illumination needs +12V from the illumination cable (brown cable going to the speedo-unit) and again another cable to ground.

The biggest challenge here is to manufacture a suitable case for the meter, since it is meant to be installed inside a car cockpit. I had a great opportunity to consult a hot rod builder, who did an outstanding piece of a workmanship here. The case was made out of acid proof steel and when polished it looks really good. And it won’t rust!.

The bottom plate (black plate under the tacho on fig 1) is useful to connect the tacho to bike. Figure 2 depicts the mechanical installation to Venox. I removed first the head light package (fig 4). There appear to be almost all the necessary cables inside the main light cover…a good place to hide the connections. Then the signal light package was removed, a 5.5 mm hole was drilled and then M6mm thread was made into the aluminum body. This connects the tacho firmly to the bike.

Finally the parts were put together and a test drive was done. Everything worked as expected. The final result looks good at least to me (figs. 5 and 6).

Illumination works also – not bad.

As a summary – the biggest part in this show was to construct the case for this automotive instrument. Electrical connections were rather simple to do. All in all, it was worth installing.
