  To put it in perspective....there are no mountains (they are about 8 hours to the west), just lots and lots of beaches, most of which is in the National Park system. The Outer BanX's are chain of barrier islands just off the coast of North Carolina. Most of the land is only 4 - 6 feet above sea level. Moving the Hatteas lighthouse     where I live is on Colington Island (the first land grant by England) , it sits in the sound between Kitty Hawk and Manteo (Roanoke Island, site of the "Lost Colony" ).  .. You can see the 15 min. of 2 lane "twistys" that I have the pleasure of riding every day to get to the main road. "0" shows where I live  [color] This shows the 7 mile ride from the beach house on the right to where I live to the left.(nice "twisty" fun road)  |

The only downside is Hurricanes...although a major one last hit in the 1950's. Hurricane Isabel 3 years ago was a problem on the mainland because of flooding , on the island, only IF you built right on the beach.. LIKE THESE...just asking for trouble..  SOUTH NAGS HEAD, the road use to continue wilh houses on the beach side.. they went bye-bye with hurricane Isabel  KITTY HAWK. there use to be houses on the beach side all the way down...just about any storm now wipes out more. (many still standing are now condemd as their sewege systems are gone :shock: .   Looking at these two photos you can see why twice in the last 10 years a new "INLET" (actually an "outlet" as its the water backing up in the sound to the left that creates the breach trying to get out) has been created here...only to be filled back in !!   HURRICANE DAMAGE:    NOW DO YOU SEE WHY I LIVE ON COLINGTON ISLAND ON THE SOUND SIDE OF THE OUTER BANXS !!! [redit][/redit] Edited by obxbiker, Tuesday Aug 12 2008, 09:18 AM.

Where the road ends....you now have to use four wheel drive to gain access to the homes farther north...(on the beach)  The multi million dollar homes on the far northern banks where the only access is by riding on the beach...  The border with Virgina...its closed with a gate !!!  |

Anytime Dave...and Glen it makes a great ride coming from the south when you take the ferry from the mainland to Ocacoke island. Tie it in some time on your trip(s) north...thousands of motorcyclist do it. |

Mate, I will be looking forward to it. Ive been wanting to get back to the States since 91. I had a great time and when I started I didnt know anyone, unfortunatly the stay was too short. A trip is always better when your heading off to see your friends as well. :HAPPYRIDER: |

Not a problem George, I was considering bringing my bike over initially. But as Amish said for the cost of that I could get a bike over there, so taking that into consideration Im now planning on getting something and bringing it home as a momento. So a nice silver Venox to keep my nice silver GV company wouldnt go astray, getting something that I cant get over here would be different. "Got to keep people wondering", we only get the Kymco scooters over here. Parts are not a bad a problem as one could think, besides the body parts, Honda can supply the usual mechanical parts that are interchangeable and the rest will be sourced from the net. The only problem will be getting a Venox to start with but I'll worry about that when the time comes. I will be brushing up on the Aussie lingo before I go and mate the American accent works wonders with the ladies over here as well. A beautiful place to live and ride. Been there. Rented a house in Nags Head for a Fam. re-union/vaca. 2 years ago. The local (and famous) "Hatteras clam chowder" was delicious. Also went for beer and seafood snacks at "Dirty Dicks Crabhouse"  Swam at the beach and had a blast. Much to see and do there. A great place, those Outer Banks.

OBX news story from last weekend.. A noreaster came through... the pic below is showing nc12 the north/south road being cleared of sand and making a way for the water to get back to the ocean which is a a couple doz yards to the right.  ''Outer Banks residents are still dealing with the aftermath of a nor'easter that pummeled the North Carolina coast this week. The storm's eye made landfall early Friday at Wrightsville Beach, eroding beaches along the coast. “You get use to it. It's kind of give and take. You live in the city and have all the stuff you need, but it's not as beautiful as it is down here,” Rodanthe resident Eric Nelson said. An on-going trouble spot is N.C. Highway 12, near Rodanthe. Drivers are still having to take it slow because of standing water along that section of the roadway. It is the only North/South route along the Outer Banks. “My car was stuck up there pretty much all day until 11 p.m., which was low tide,” Rodanthe resident Erik Stone said. Huge storm swells pushed a significant amount of water and sand across the road when the nor'easter hit this week.. Department of Transportation crews will continue to monitor Highway 12 as long as the Atlantic Ocean is active. Forecasters said the storm will move up the mid-Atlantic coast over the next day or two, with strong winds in some areas as well as coastal flooding, high surf and rip currents. Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on newly formed Tropical Storm Kyle, which was about 555 miles south-southwest of Bermuda.
