Great time - I am trying to write up a ride report - but it is just about impossible. I write for a living and cant come up with the words to do it justice. I will try - but it wont even be close.
Kacivic and Nate - I cant thank you guys enough for doing the ride with me. I'd have never done it alone and I couldn't talk Mrs. Amish into it after 5 years of trying. I had pretty much thought the trip would never happen. But you guys made it real. Pictures, no pictures, shirts, pins, whatever - I wanted the memories of it and the experience of it. Nothing can replace that image of us riding across the 7 mile bridge that first afternoon.... the whole trip was about that one moment for me. Thanks guys.
Annox, Serp, dude we met in Destin, my Aunt and Uncle, Girlie, Ken, Justin, Ricky, Strawman, Arsinio (hahaha), Otter, Sage, the girls from Cafe Risque, Mac - It wouldn't have been half as much fun without each of you.
I lost feeling in my hands after the second day of riding - so I'm going to the doctor this week to see if there is some magic pill to help me, but even if comes down to living with it like it is - was worth it all!

On Friday October 10, 2008 – Nate and Kacivic (Jason) arrived at Chataeu D’ Amish around 6 PM. The sun was setting, the mosquitoes were out, and the pizza was cooking. Nate decided he wanted ........

......to swap out handlebars for a new set he got in yesterday so we spent 2 hours outside cutting, grinding, bolting and swapping bars 3 times before he was happy.
We ate pizza and watched “Wild Hogs” while we laughed and made fun of it. We were up by 7 and on the road the following day.
Saturday October 11 – Mobile, Alabama to Sopchoppy, Florida (289 miles): We decided to take Hwy 98 the whole day. It cruises thru the beachside of the Panhandle of Florida and we had all day to do a few hundred miles. Not very eventful today. We stopped for lunch at a McDonalds and watched in fascination as an entire crew of employees under the age of 23 exploded a ketchup pump machine and was able to communicate with each other using only the word “dude” to describe everything. “dude” and point, “dude” and laugh, “dude” and shook their heads, and so forth…
We picked up a tag-along during the ride. A guy from Kiln, Mississippi joined us for the ride a short way. Funny guy – was headed to Daytona Beach and rode with us until his cut off came up.
Campsite was a nice place; Ochlocknee River State Park. A college fraternity and a group of teenage girls made the night kind of interesting. I don’t sleep, so I just stayed up and watched the interactions. Around 3AM I heard Nate stumbling around and watched him fall out of his tent as he was trying to make it to the restroom. When he got pretty close – I shined the lantern at him and scared him to death. I was trying to make him pee on himself, but he just yelled “oh sh**” and jumped. I said “dude!” and laughed – then decided it was time to catch some sleep.
Sunday October 12 – Sopchoppy, Florida to Lithia, Florida (291 miles): We got an early start this day. Packed up the campsite by moonlight and walked the bikes out of the populated area so we wouldn’t disturb the rest of the campground. Headed east on Hwy. 98 – passed a few deer, gassed up and made it to Hwy. 19 where we headed south to Chiefland, Florida and met Serp. Serp is a totally cool guy who has logged more miles on 2 wheels than most people do in a lifetime of 4 wheels.
We chatted for a few minutes and he said he had a route plotted for us to get us to Anthony’s (Annox) house for a BBQ lunch and get together. Serp must’ve found every beautiful twisty road in the state for us. Jason kept up with him like it was nothing, Nate was ticked because his bike wasn’t setup to handle the twisties like he wanted, and I was just hopping I wouldn’t wreck trying to keep up with them. Remember I was a heavy, cruiser – not a sportbike… But we got there and had a great time.
Annox had his Venox in the driveway and we all parked next to it for some photo ops. Annox and his wife had a spread of food for us. Holy cow! Burgers, chicken, hot dogs, salads, cake, drinks, etc… Bob Whitte showed up and some of Annox’s friends – it was a great time. It seemed like just a few minutes before we were all loading back up and heading for the next campsite. Never had 3 or 4 hours fly by that fast! Serp graciously led us to the next site and we rode up to a locked a gate and no guard. We took turns punching numbers into the gate’s keypad until Nate hit the magic numbers and the da** gate rolled back . We headed inside trying to setup before the thunderstorm that was overhead actually started raining. The mosquitoes at this campsite were the worst of the trip. I lost all the weight I gained at Annox’s house because these da** bugs bit me so much. Hahaha. But when we got up – the park was a beautiful place.
Monday October 13 – Lithia, Florida to Key West, Florida (380 miles): We packed up at dawn and rode to I-75. We figured it may add a few miles but we could get some serious distance covered using interstate travel. Aside from the high cross winds and construction – it was pretty boring travel. I got a bee or wasp of some kind stuck in my jacket and it stung me like 7 or 8 times before I could kill it. That kinda hurt.
Another 60 miles to a gas station and Jason got the stinger out of my back for me. Im not allergic so we just kept riding. We dropped off I-75 onto Hwy 41 and took it thru the Everglades.
There was a wicked looking storm coming at us so we pulled over and donned the rain gear. There was more water on the road then coming from the sky – but we kept it on until we reached route 997 (Krome Ave) to hit US 1 and down to the keys.
When we stopped I noticed my rain pants were shredded. So I was without rain gear for the rest of the trip – oh well. Its my vacation.
We managed to get on US 1 and head south thru the Keys to Bahia Honda State Park.
We had reservations for a camp site there. When we got there – the campsite was nestled on this lagoon but there was no way to get our tent stakes thru the bedrock and no electricity to charge our phones or gear. We managed to talk to the campsite guards who let us trade up into one of the “cabins” across the lagoon. The cabins were 2 bedroom, with a fold out sofa, kitchen, balchony, covered parking, and AC! It was worth the upgrade!
I called my Aunt and Uncle (Lynne and Dan Newman) who lived on the next island (Little Torch Key) and they were expecting us for dinner. I hadn’t seen my aunt and uncle in 23 years, but we talk all the time. They gave us directions to their house and had a dinner of fillet mignon, corn on the cob, salad, - the works! Was delicious! We ate like kings again and then waddled our way back to the bikes and headed for our cabin. We sat outside for a few hours, drank some beer and told stories. Great day.
Tuesday October 14 – Key West: We got up around 9 or so – and headed out for breakfast. Went to a local IHOP and planned our day. We decided to drop in at my Uncle’s gun store before heading to the end of the keys and doing the touristy thing. My uncle’s shop (Newmans Outfitters) was pretty cool. He had an indoor air-rifle range and tons of guns for sale.
The air-rifles are popular in the keys to control the iguana population. Apparently there are a lot of them and they reproduce quickly – so hunting them with pellet guns is encouraged. After spending some time with Uncle Dan, we loaded back up and headed for the Key West buoy. I wanted to take a picture standing at the buoy. We drove our bikes over 1,000 miles in 3 days to see this friggin buoy.
We managed to park about a block away from it and Jason noticed Nate’s rear tire was showing steel belt thru the rubber. Time for a new rear tire. We walked up and down Duval Street – had a quick stop at the Hogs Breathe Saloon, and found a local scooter/used bike dealer just off Duval. This guy is a total rip off artist. If you are in the Keys – don’t do business with this clown! He wanted over $300 for the tire, and more money on top of that for installing it. After we restrained Nate my Aunt found another place at the end of the island for us and Nate called that guy. He had a tire for $268 installed. Still a little high, but we convinced Nate that trying to make it to Miami or Daytona was insane. We pulled our money and snagged the tire. Then we headed back to the Cabin. We went to a local Pizza Hut for dinner and called it a night. We agreed that since the next day is a long ride – we should get up early to beat traffic. We decided we would be leaving before 5AM.
Wednesday October 15 – Key West, Florida to Deltona, Florida (425 miles): Well, we finally got up and hit the road around 6:30 or 7AM . Nothing amazing during this ride – just a lot of seat time.
Arrived at April (FreakinGirlie)’s house at 5PM. We set up our tents in her backyard, met her husband Ken and her son Justin. She fixed a wicked pasta and sausage dinner that would make you rob a bank to have a second helping.
Then we spent the whole evening talking on her back patio. We finally crashed out around 2:30 AM.
Thursday October 16 – Destination Daytona in Ormond Beach: We were joined by Ricky (rckprkns) and that made our group a total of 6 bikes. Ken (April’s husband) led the way on his Harley Sportster, April on her GV250, Rick on his GV250, Jason on his GV650, Nate on his Bandit 1200, and me on my C50.
We hit the place and saw tons of bikes and vendors. TV bikes, TV personalities, hit the J&P Cycles store, got some free cigars from Black and Mild, checked out Vance and Hines, Arlen Ness, etc. Was a great time. We stopped at McDonalds on the way home and ate and laughed, then spent the whole night talking again. We crashed sometime after 3AM.
Friday October 17 – Main Street in Daytona Beach (Biketoberfest): By this time I have given up on taking pictures. April and Jason have better cameras and seem to be doing a good job – so I am just gonna enjoy the events. We are joined by Strawman (Super cool guy – wish we could ride together more), PlayingOtter and SageDil who drove all the way from North Carolina thru the night to hang with us. Even Rick decided he hadn’t had enough of us so he joined us later that afternoon April, Otter, and Sage rode in April’s car since they’d drove so much and were pretty tired. Today Ken left the Harley in the garage and brought out his Radian 600cc. We changed the oil and fork oil before we left, and checked everyone’s tires. Then we hit the road. We hit Main Street sometime around 1:30 or 2PM. We walked the entire street from Beach Blvd to the canal and back again. Managed to stop at one bar and witness the worst wet t-shirt contest in the history of man. There were 3 ringers out of 6 contestants. The non-ringers were not only obvious – but hefty and rather unattractive – even for a biker crowd. Haha. At one point we looked over and Sage was texting on his phone rather than watching the events. We made fun of him and he laughed. He kept texting the entire day and night. Haha. Poor fella is addicted. We stopped and got coffee and doughnuts at the Dunkin Donuts and sat on the curb watching the traffic and bikes ride past. Then we made 2 more laps before we decided to leave sometime after 12:30 AM. Good time tho. Enjoyed everyone’s company.
Saturday October 18 – Deltona, Florida to Live Oak, Florida (165 miles): We got a slow start this morning. Since we all figured we had a short ride day, it seemed like we couldn’t get anyone to get moving. Haha. After packing up, saying thanks to April and Ken, we hit the road just before 2PM. Our group was Nate, Jason, and I, and Otter and Sage since they were heading North to the Carolinas anyway. We hit Hwy 40 and encountered some rain before finding our way to I-75. We opted for the interstate since it was getting late, but we were hungry and I chose a nice little “world famous” restaurant off of I-75. The guys thought I was kidding when I pointed to the billboards we saw on the highway, but Café Risque was a great place to take a break . (www.webareitall.com) How many places can you get a great burger served by totally naked beautiful women?! We were on vacation! Besides, after the disappointing wet t-shirt contest, we had to see some great boobies to get us back on track. Haha. We finally left there about 5PM, got gas next door, and headed to the Suwannee River Camp ground. Met Mac and Phil and as we arrived and quickly setup camp in the dark. It seemed like were always setting up and tearing down camp in the dark. It was 7PM so Jason and I headed a few miles south to get some grub at a gas station and bring it back for everyone. Jason got a killer campfire started and we stood around it as we noticed the temperature drop during the night. I think we called it a night somewhere around 1 AM.
Sunday October 19 – Live Oak, Florida to Mobile, Alabama / Gulfport, Mississippi – 350 miles / 410 miles: It was close to 45 degrees when we got up. Butt-friggin cold. We said bye to Mac, Sage, and Otter and we hopped on I-10 and headed west. We were all tired, cold, and ready to get to a stopping point. I bailed out in Mobile and headed for home as Jason and Nate headed for Gulfport, MS. I got home, hugged the wife, retold the stories and adventures for her until I went horse and lost my voice. Called it a night around 9PM and finished up the best vacation I have ever had.
Thanks to everyone who I met along the way, those who fed us, hosted us, rode with us, danced for us, and especially Nate and Jason for riding with me. I wouldn’t have done it without you guys saying you’d go with. I thank you immensely.

I hope some day to be able to do a Texas, Bama, OBX run. Your not alone, I too get the numb clawhands on long trips. Best you can do is lots of stretch breaks.
