Cages vs. Two Wheels
(safe following distance )

"The depth perception is different when you are following a motorcycle," "When you see one, it is actually a little closer than you think."

Futrell said the difference in perception has to do with size.

"The safe following distance for vehicles is one car-length for every 10 mph you are traveling. With a motorcycle or scooter, I think it is safer to have at least a car length and a half between you and a motorcycle or scooter."

Futrell feels the increased following distance is safer because a motorcycle is able to stop faster than an automobile, and the momentum is not the same. Plus, there is the unpredictability of what will happen if a cyclist does have an accident.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation emphasizes safety for their riders by providing tips on their Web site ( http://www.msf-usa.org ).
" On the Web site they remind motorcycle riders to drive defensively''.

"Give yourself space. People driving cars often just don't see motorcycles. Even when drivers do see you, chances are they've never been on a motorcycle and can't properly judge your speed."

I had some f-wit in a Toyota Hilux sitting right up my rear this morning - actually he was so close I could have turned round and touched the bullbar. I was thinking if I have to brake because something happens in front of me I am dead

Let them pass when theyre riding your ass like that..chances are later down the road youll see them plowed up someone else's ass then you can give them the middle finger salute. Sometimes i get shitty in that situation i fang it and leave them for dead

apart from the size factor most cagers also have no real understanding of how fast a bike changes speed and don't allow for that accelleration in their calculations of just where you might be in 5 seconds time.

Many cagers also operate at Harley baud rates

They also dont realise how quick you can stop

QUESTION(s) ? piwyrmanagement@gmail.com
The last time for me was minor....

I was second in line to pull out of a grocery store to the main road.
The car in front of me pulled out so I moved forward , as I am looking in my mirror I see the teenage girl behind be looking to the left as she moves up quickly. Its apparent that she thinks I am going to go ahead and pull out to but I see a car pulling in the main lane from across the street just down from us , she does not see this so she, thinking I am going to go, guns the car to try and make it before the traffic gets to us.

BAM !! I get pushed forward about 6-7 feet into traffic but stay upright. Fortunately the on coming traffic just has time to stop, as the front truck also saw it coming.

Was riding 'YelloNox' , the only damage was cracked rear light, hairline crack in rear body panel running forward from the light and broke 'flap' the licence plate attaches to.

I guess the FACT she had a cell phone glued to her ear contributed to her not paying attention !
The first thing out of her mouth was:
''WOW, I did not know a motorcycle could have a radio like that''

Had the 4 speaker statillie (180watts total) Roady radio system blasting ''BORN TO BE WILD'' at the time....

Completely agree, car drivers mostly have no idea. I always thought I was bike-aware when driving, having several friends who were bikers. Now I know differently.

I often get the situation where someone is so far up my rear end they can see my tonsils. Mostly it's on the motorway, and I just pull over and let them passed. Other than that I have found the best way is just like in a car: Signal to them if possible (wave them back), then tap the brake pedal v. gently to flash your brake light. After that, if they still don't get the message, slow down. They will either get the message or pass you most of the time, if not at least you are less likely to have to brake sharply.

If you wanna be really evil, you can then do what a few of my friends do: Wait for them to start passing you and floor it, shooting off into the distance, preferably giving them the one-finger salute. :CHOPPER:

Never been rear-ended on eitgher 4 or 2 wheels. Bit of luck never will. Doubtfull though...

As I said I have never been rear ended on the bike but I have twice in a cage. The first one - I was stopped at the lights and some idiot hit me doing 110km/h - it made a bit of a mess.

rear-ended twice in car too, not on bike thank all that is holy, although I did have someone behind me on Saturday who seemed determined to make me a hood ornament - I adopted the slow down until the bastard passes approach.

REAL RIDERS and OWNERS HERE !! piwyrmanagement@gmail.com
:OLD: I have never been rear ended on my bike, of course I always am on one side of the lane or the other never in the middle. Last time I got rear ended I was in my GMC and I got hit so hard it picked the back up and broke the radiator as well as knocked the caps off my battery. I killled that LTD though I build my own trailer hitches he impaled his car on it. My pick up is a full size extended Cab 1/2 ton. He picked the back end up about four feet, when it came down is when my drop bumper and hitch tore his car up. Of course he was uninsured. On my bike I try to be carefull about where I am with the cars around me and pull over and let people by when they are in a big hurry.

Yeah as far as I am concerned if they in that much of a hurry just move over and let them go. When you get round the next corner and they have been stopped by the Police you can always give them a wave
