If you think you check your tire pressure enough, you don't. At least I didn't. Most owners manuals will tell you to check them before every ride. Let's admit it... people tend to become complacent about certain things. I thought I was checking my tires enough, and I'm usually pretty keen about realizing that the pressure drops in colder weather, but last weekends ride with serp promted me to check the tires on my Nox and stiffen up the suspension. When I did so, I found that they were pretty low. I don't ususally let that happen.Since we have been having much cooler weather, I would suggest checking the air in your tires ASAP. It makes a big difference in how the bike behaves around turns. It's also good for your fuel economy. (perhaps it wouldnt make a difference on such a smalll scale, however studies have shown that tire pressure/ "rolling resistance" is directly related to fuel economy where cages and commercial vehicles are concerned. (and ultimately air pollution and tire life. |

Great subject. This should be part of your pre-ride /after-ride check list. Think about it... do you really want a tire to let you down on the road , be it a short or a long trip ? The answer is NO ! It might be more then just an inconvenience, it could KILL YOU ! So check your tires before and after every ride.. its a great habit to have. Now speaking of tires no matter how good you are at checking them a flat can/will happen. Its not a matter of 'If it will happen... Its a matter of when'' With this in mind you should always carry with you a means for pugging and adding air to a tire. Use it just one time and you will glad you have it. |

Because I ride my bike every day I check the tyre pressures three times a week. Just about every week I have to pump up. I always carry the plugs with me, I have to use them once so far. An interesting point though these are actually illegal in some countries. What is really stupid is here they are legal to be sold but it is actually illegal to use them in the tyre and then ride on them. |

wow! wonder what the rules are in Oz? I always carry a plug kit on each bike, also have one in the car (but not the 4x4) - I've had to use the one in the car once a couple of years ago and its still holding air as good as a clean tyre (only problem was they are low profile wide-ish performance tyres and I had to have a compressor running to get enough support to the tyre to be able to push the plug in). Have also had to use the one on the GV once - nail dead centre on the rear tread. :( I seem to have to pump up about every 2-3 weeks but then I'm not putting Greg-ometres on my bikes. :) I'm not sure a post-ride check of tyre pressures makes much sense - these should be checked cold. As long as you do a pre-ride check all should be OK. Of course that does mean that if there is something else wrong with a tyre the next day's ride is FUBAR so a visual post-ride is certainly a good idea.

Once you get alot of experience at how a tire should 'feel and look'' at the proper pressure you can bypass doing the actual gauge check each time. As far as the post ride check you get the point exactly... a visual check can make the difference between a quick start the next day or a delayed start. Pre & Post ride checks CAN be a ''kick the tires'' after you really know what you are looking for. Just do not ASSume anything. |

I agree. Unfortunately, I'm seeing more wear on my back tire than I'd like to at 10 k kms, so I'll be keeping a closer watch. I wanted to post about this because the significance is that I am a mechanic, and even mechanics get "complacent" or lazy about things like this, and the change of season with dropping temps. is all the more reason to check them. Thank you for the input guys! |

I'm airing up my tires about every two to three weeks and checking every day or every other day. About 12,500 km or 7,767 miles and I've got to start pricing a new back tire. It's looking pretty bad. Lucky for me my ride to work is only nine miles one way, but I'd sure hate to be far from home on a weekend ride with an unusable tire. |

REAL RIDERS and OWNERS HERE !! piwyrmanagement@gmail.com
|
Normally I would have to check mine every day this time of year we are having temp swings of over 40 to 50 degrees a day. A friend of mine got real mad last year because his Hyo 250 started getting 25 miles per gallon and no pick up. I told him to check his tires. He did not think a couple of pounds could make a big difference. Kept the air right and some pop clutch adjusting and now it runs like it was met to run.

Been a while since we visited this, guys. Just thought I'd bump it as a reminder for us, and to inform any newbies. Just because it's warming up is no reason to slack off. Check those tires! (Oz/Brit - "check your tyres")(Redneck - "check am tars")(Brooklyn, NY - "check dem tie-yas") (Canada - "check yur tires eh?)

Just a quick note, I'm sure it's old news to the experienced riders out there, but for the newbies (like me) it may mean the difference between a nice safe ride or an accident and/or points on your license. I check my chain every week (I'm doing about 300 miles/week), and used to use that as a time to check everything else (tyre pressure, oil, tread depth etc...) but recently I got complacent, having had nothing wrong (in spite of the change from winter to spring temperatures). It then rained heavily on my ride home from work, and I locked the rear wheel approaching a red light (I cacked my pants!) When I got to the nearest petrol station I pulled in to calm down and check the bike over. I found the tyre pressures were down about 10psi! And, worse, my tyres were nearly slick. I had checked them all only a month ago. That would have been 3 points on my license had the cops pulled me, and in the wet just detroyed rear end grip. I am now back to my weekly everything-check, with a new rear tyre, and I have also taken to carrying a pressure guage in my pocket and check, quickly, before each ride (I don't have the experience to be able to just kick the tyre). I am just glad I didnt lock up on approach to a corner on my back-road route home. That would likely have meant death, given the shear drops at one side and the shear rock face on the other! I have had the bejesus scared outa me, and will not be getting complacent again. |

Tell me about it! In the end it's cost me £100 for a new tyre, but I needed that anyway. It scares me more the amount of grip I lost. I've ridden in those conditions before, and it was only a tiny touch of the pedal that locked it up. My lesson from it: Respect and care for your bike, or it'll bite you in the ass, and fast! |
